Disposal Hums But Does Not Grind

What the hum means

Power is reaching the motor, so the wiring, the switch and the breaker are all fine. The flywheel is stuck — usually something wedged between the impeller and the grind ring. Left humming, the motor will overheat and trip its own reset.

Switch it off. Running it while it hums achieves nothing and cooks the motor.

How a jam is freed

Cut the power first. Switch the disposal off at the wall and at the breaker before anything goes into the chamber, and never put a hand in it. Use tongs or pliers.

Most disposals have a hex socket in the center of the underside. A hex key turned in it rocks the flywheel back and forth and frees the obstruction. Units without that socket are freed from above with a purpose-made lever, not with a broom handle.

Once it turns freely, retrieve whatever caused it — with tongs, never by hand — then press the reset button underneath before restoring power.

What causes them

Bones and fruit stones account for a great many. So do bottle caps, small utensils and the pull tabs off cans, all of which fall in unnoticed. Fibrous waste jams differently: celery and artichoke leaves wrap around the impeller rather than wedging under it.

The list of what should not go down it is mostly a list of what causes this.

When it is not a jam

A disposal that hums, frees, and then jams again within days is telling you something else — usually that the grind ring is worn and no longer breaking waste down before it reaches the drain. That is a replacement conversation.
