Why a Garbage Disposal Smells, and What Actually Fixes It

Where the smell lives

Not in the chamber floor, which gets rinsed every time the sink runs. It lives on the underside of the rubber splash guard, on the upper walls of the chamber above the water line, and in the gap behind the guard where food pushes past and stays.

Why pouring things in does not work

Anything poured in runs straight down and out. It never touches the surfaces holding the smell. That is why disposal deodorizers give a few hours of scent and no change.

What does work

Cut the power first. Switch the disposal off at the wall and at the breaker before anything goes into the chamber, and never put a hand in it. Use tongs or pliers.

Clean the splash guard by hand, both sides — most lift out, and the underside is usually where the problem is visible. Then grind ice with cold water running, which scours the chamber walls mechanically rather than chemically.

Citrus peel afterwards is a scent, not a clean, and there is no harm in it.

When a smell is not the disposal

A smell that persists after the guard is clean, or one that is stronger when the dishwasher runs, is usually the trap or the dishwasher hose rather than the unit. A dry trap in a rarely used sink lets sewer gas up the drain, and no amount of cleaning the disposal will touch it.
